Looking for new pet food or treats? Check the labels!

Last Tuesday, animal health officials announced that it was Chinese jerky that caused more than 3,600 dogs and ten cats to become sick, killing approximately 600 pets. However, in spite of the more than 1,000 tests, the FDA still doesn’t know what is causing the animals to become sick.

While you may want to stick to your usual pet treats for now, preferably those made in the USA, it is also important to start paying attention to the labels when buying food and treats for your pets.

The terms “premium,” “super-premium,” and “holistic” don’t require higher-quality ingredients. These are just marketing terms that can be used however the manufacturer chooses.

If products use the term “natural,” they should, by and large, not contain artificial colors, flavors, or preservatives.

The term “organic” requires that products follow the same strict requirements that were set for human organic food.
