GMO Labeling Requirements

The state of Vermont just signed a law to require labels on genetically modified. The law would take effect in July 2016, which would give the state plenty of time to prepare rules about the label. This will be the first law requiring the labeling of genetically modified foods.

Other states have previously passed similar laws, but the legislation said that the laws wouldn’t go into effect until other states passed laws requiring the labeling of GMOs. Unlike those states, Vermont’s legislation doesn’t have any strings attached. (Lawsuits from food manufactures will likely be following.)

The FDA doesn’t currently have any labeling requirements for labeling GMO foods, although they did put out a statement a year ago that read “The FDA supports voluntary labeling for food derived from genetic engineering. Currently, food manufacturers may indicate through voluntary labeling whether foods have or have not been developed through genetic engineering provided that such labeling is truthful and not misleading.”

This movement by Vermont and other states to impose labeling is a reflection of the opinions of consumers. Take advantage of this when you put GMO-free labels on your GMO-free products! Recognizing the countries overseas have not allowed genetically modified foods for years, many people are concerned about the long term effects of consuming genetically modified meat and vegetables. Embrace this and give consumers what they want. Label your GMO-free foods starting today!
