Connecticut Urges States to Pass GMO Labeling Laws

More and more states are taking a stand by insisting that genetically modified foods are labeled. Connecticut was the first state to pass legislation and it was followed by Maine on June 12. Voters in Washington State will cast ballots on November 5 and Connecticut is urging other states to do the same, especially since the law will not go into effect until four states with a total population of 20 million have a similar law.

There is conflicting scientific evidence on whether or not genetically modified food is dangerous to the public health, which is why, unlike the GMO bans in European countries, the United States is moving toward labeling GMO foods rather than banning them.

Many businesses have already begun implementing GMO labels into their packaging, although some large grocery chains are resistant, out of concern for how the new labels will affect sales.

Many people claim that they would avoid GMO foods at all costs while others say that the lack of evidence and the higher cost of food would compel them to keep purchasing genetically modified.
