Confusion Still Surrounds Organic Label

Despite last month’s study that established that consumers believe organic foods taste better and is healthier than their non-organic counterparts, a recent poll found that 59 percent of people still believe that the organic label is also a marketing strategy.

These two polls confirm what many have been saying for years: consumers don’t really understand what “organic” means.

Words like “organic” and “all-natural” are often used interchangeably in the eyes of consumers. What they don’t understand is that the words “all-natural,” truly are a marketing strategy, since there is no definition or standard manufacturers have to meet in order to use the phrase on the packaging. “Organic,” on the other hand, has a long list of requirements that manufacturers must adhere to do use the label. It’s the reason you will see the USDA Organic label on so many products. Companies want to make it clear that those products are regulated by the USDA.

However, that said, placing USDA organic labels on your organic products can be a great marketing strategy – as long as you meet the federal requirements. There are many informed consumers out there who are interested in products that haven’t been treated with chemicals. Use organic labels on these products to ensure you market your products to those consumers!
