Top Five Packing Tips for College Students

With summer about to come to an end, you may be about to head back to college for the fall. Use these five tips to make the daunting task of packing your things a bit easier this fall.

    1. Create a detailed shopping list. Make sure you coordinate with your roommate about what items you will be bringing with you. Create a detailed list of all the items that you will need to purchase before you move in…don’t wait until the last minute!

    1. Bins. The large plastic storage bins will be extremely invaluable to you this fall. After you have unpacked, clear plastic bins can be great for storage under your bed, since space is often very limited in dormitories. Label each bin with Zebra removable labels so you can locate your stored items quickly and easily later.

    1. Keep clothing on hangers. You will waste a lot of time in removing clothes from hangers, only to replace them later. Instead, leave your clothes on their hangers and place a garbage bag over them, poking a hole at the top to slip the hangers through. Tie the bottom of the bag to protect clothes that might fall off their hangers during transport.

    1. Hang on to packaging. Keep the boxes and packaging for any electronics you are taking with you, as it will make it easier to safely transport those items home at the end of the year.

    1. Consider other items you might need. There are a number of items you may want but not think to bring, such as an area rug, a fan, artwork, a bulletin board, or a tool kid. Try to think of everything you may need to make your room a cozy, comfortable place to live… and be prepared to run to the store when you’re moved in.
