How to Remove Labels

We often want to find labels that will stand the test of time and remain permanently in place. But what happens if you change your mind? What if, after 2 years of enjoying your car decal, you suddenly want it gone? What if you want to remove a wine bottle label or some other label intended to permanently adhere to its surface?

There are several factors you will want to consider when removing a label, such as the adhesive, the material, and the surface to which it is applied.

One of the easiest methods for removing labels is to invest in a label remover application, and if you are going to be frequently removing labels or you are concerned with removing them in one piece, this may be something you want to consider.

Removing a Label from Glass or Metal

Before you begin to work on removing a label make sure you test the product you are using on the material (preferably an area that will not be visible).

Some recommended products are ammonia, Goo Gone, or Fast Orange.

    • Apply the product to a folded paper towel, cloth or pad and lay it on top of the label, using masking tape to hold it in place.
    • Leave it sitting on the label for 1-2 hours. After that time remove the pad. The label should easily slide off.

Removing a Label from Glass or Plastic

Another method for removing labels is to soak them. This works well with bottles.

    • Fill your sink with warm to hot water and place the bottle in to soak.
    • Leave the bottle in water overnight so the water can take effect, although you may want to check it periodically.
    • After soaking overnight simply peel the label off the bottle.
