Beer Labels On Soda Cans

A temporary beer can shortage created an excellent indirect marketing opportunity for this beverage manufacturer in Victoria, British Colombia, Canada. Contact LabelValue today for a quote on custom beer labels or shrink sleeve beer labels.

Phillips brewing & malting co, a manufacturer of soda beverages and beer went viral on Tik Tok recently.

Everyone is familiar with the shortage on products recently, whether its toilet paper, tissues, or hand sanitizer. This shortage now includes beer cans.

Why Put Beer Labels On Soda Cans?

Because of the beer can shortage, Phillips brewing used cans from another beverage they manufacture, their non-alcoholic Strawberry Sparkling Water. The sparkling water soda cans were then filled with the Dinosour Stone Fruit beer and labeled with Dinosour Stone fruit beer labels on the cans.

This is when Tik Tok user Rebirthofbeefstew peeled off the beer label on the Dinosour Stone Fruit Beer and found a can of the non-alcoholic Sparkmouth Strawberry Sparkling Water under it. She then posted the video to tik tok. Attracting over 282,400 plays in less than 3 weeks.  Her video suggests if you need a beer on the go, just peel off the Dinosour Stone Fruit beer label and let the Strawberry Sparkling water can show.

But the founder of Phillips Brewing, Matt Phillips, said this was not his intention and not the message of the brewery.

“There’s certainly no intent from us to make it easier for people to skirt the rules and we’re not advocating they do,” Matt says, adding this is only a short term solution until more beer cans become available.

Phillips said the beer label on the Strawberry sparkling water came when the Dinosour Beer got a surge in orders, at the same time they were phasing out the strawberry sparkling water, and the brewery came up short on beer cans so just used some of the strawberry sparkling water cans to fulfill the orders.

“It kind of gives us a little extra supply,” he said. “I don’t really think we thought people would start peeling them off or anything like that. But I guess idle hands, right?”

Phillips said the beer can shortage has been a problem since the past 4 years, and the supply chain issues with the pandemic made it worse.

“But really it’s that can [demand] has really overwhelmed the manufacturer’s ability to produce them, so you get into a situation where you have to forecast quite a ways out and even then you’re kind of fighting for supply,”

Two of the world’s biggest aluminum beverage can producers have been forced to find new sources for aluminum over the past year, due to the coronavirus pandemic and the resulting economic downturn, and they expect to continue to scramble to find aluminum resources for years.
