Choosing the Right Barcode Reader for your Business
- Sep 27, 2011
Barcode readers are no longer confined to retail or grocery stores, but are, instead, being used in an increasing number of establishments, including libraries and large school systems. They are useful in efficiently managing inventory and databases. However, all bar code readers are not the same and some have features that are more useful than others. It’s important to be careful in your selection as you select the right one for your organization.
There are three types of barcode readers:
- Laser-based
- Charged coupled device
- Camera-based
A laser-based reader is useful because the laser beam is emitted from the reader itself, enabling it to read the barcode from a distance. A CCD-based reader uses light from light sensors to identify items, whereas a camera-based device takes photographs of the barcode. Each comes with its own set of advantages and disadvantages.
Establish exactly what the barcode reader is going to be used for and whether it is going to be used to trade or to save time of the staff who will be using it. Compare the features of the barcode readers to establish which features are useful for your business and make sure that it is tough enough to withstand the conditions in which you are using it.
