Dymo LabelWriter Frequently Asked Questions

How do I reload a Dymo label maker?

To reload a Dymo label maker, open the cover, remove the empty core, place a new label roll on the spool, insert the spool into the cradle, feed the label through the printer slot, close the cover, and press the feed button.

Why won’t my Dymo labels feed correctly?

Most feed issues are caused by:

  • Labels are not centered in the feed slot
  • The locking ring is not pressed in fully
  • Using curled or damaged labels

Removing and reseating the roll usually fixes alignment problems.

Do Dymo LabelWriter printers need ink?

No, Dymo label printers use direct thermal printing, meaning there’s no ink, toner, or ribbon required.

What labels work with the Dymo LabelWriter 450?

Dymo LabelWriter 450 and earlier series work with Dymo-compatible labels designed for direct thermal printers. Using compatible labels can significantly reduce costs without sacrificing print quality.

Should labels unwind from the top or bottom of the roll?

For Dymo LabelWriter printers, labels should unwind from the bottom of the roll, feeding up and into the printer’s internal feed slot. When labels unwind correctly, the printer can detect label gaps properly and avoid skipped or misaligned labels. If labels are unwinding from the top, the printer may have trouble sensing where one label ends and the next begins, which can lead to feeding issues.

Do I need to calibrate my Dymo LabelWriter after loading labels?

In most cases, no calibration is needed. Dymo LabelWriters automatically calibrate when you load new labels and press the feed button. After loading a new roll, close the printer cover fully, press the button below the LED light, and allow the printer to advance and align the labels. This quick step lets the printer detect the label size and spacing so it’s ready to print accurately.

Why does my Dymo LabelWriter skip labels after loading?

If your Dymo printer skips labels, it’s usually due to a small loading or alignment issue. To fix this, remove the roll, reseat it carefully, feed the label straight into the slot, and press the feed button again. In most cases, that resolves the issue right away.
