Why Government Food Labeling Plans May Be a Moot Issue

Food labels are the first thing consumers look at in stores.

It was just this spring that Whole Foods announced that, by 2018, all products in the US and Canadian stores would be labeled to indicate that they contain genetically modified ingredients. While they were the first grocery chain to make the move, they will likely not be the last. Just a few weeks ago Chipotle also chose to act without waiting for federal regulations to take effect and began labeling all of its GMO ingredients.

Other companies have made nutritional labeling changes to meet consumer demands without waiting for the government. Panera Bread began posting calorie information years ago and McDonald's did the same just last year. Starbucks also recently announced that it would begin providing calorie information for its products.
