How to Set up and install a Dymo LabelWriter Printer

So you just received your Dymo printer but you're not sure how to set it up? You're in the right place. 

This guide walks you through the basic steps to get your Dymo Labelwriter running, plus some updated tips for modern operating systems and a quick checklist before you start. 

Before You Start Setting Up Your Dymo LabelWriter

Before plugging in your printer, make sure you have: 

  • Supported OS: Windows 10+ or macOS 13+
  • Admin rights on your computer
  • Do not plug in the USB cable until prompted during installation
  • Use a direct USB-A or USB-C port (avoid unpowered hubs). 
  • Download the latest DYMO Connect software from LabelValue's Software & Drivers page. 

Step 1: Open up the DYMO box.


Make sure you have all your materials: LabelWriter printer, USB cable, CD-ROM, cleaning card, roll of DYMO Stamps labels, roll of address labels, quick start guide, power adapter, and power cord.

Step 2: Install the software

Update for 2025: Most modern computers don't include CD drivers. If you're on Windows 10/11 or macOS 13+, download DYMO Connect instead of using the CD. 


To install the software on a Windows system:

1. Close all open Microsoft Office applications.

2. Download DYMO Connect from our Dymo Software & Drivers page.

3. Open the .exe file, click install, and follow the on-screen instructions.

4. Only connect your USB cable when prompted.


To install the software on a Mac OS system:

1. Download DYMO Connect for Mac from our Dymo Software & Drivers page.

2. Open the .dmg file and drag to the DYMO app into your Applications folder.

3. Approve any prompts in System Setting > Privacy & Security.

4. Connect your USB cable when prompted.

Step 3: Connect your LabelWriter printer


To connect the power:

1. Plug the power cord into the power adapter.

2. Plug the power adapter into the power connector on the bottom of the printer.

3. Plug the other end of the power cord into a power outlet.

 

4. Plug the USB cable into the USB port on your computer.

5. Insert the power and USB cables through the cable channel and set the printer down.

6. When the software is completely installed, connect the other end of the USB cable to an available USB port on your computer.

Step 4: Print your labels! 

Once connected, open DYMO Connect and print your first label.

Dymo 450 Troubleshooting Tips

If your printer isn't working as expected: 

  • Printer not detected: Try a direct USB port (avoid hubs).
  • Dymo Connect service not running: Restart the service in Windows or relaunch the app on Mac. 
  • Wrong label size defaults: Adjust in Dymo Connect preferences.
