5 Easy Ways to Make Your Dymo LabelWriter Last
- Jun 21, 2013
Did you know that the Dymo LabelWriter was designed to print 2 million inches of thermal labels?! That comes out to about 500,000 standard address labels. To put that into perspective for you, if you printed 20 address labels a day, every day of the year, it would take more than 68 years to wear out your Dymo LabelWriter.
However, just because the printers are designed to last that long doesn’t mean they will. How long your printer lasts is entirely dependent upon how it is used and maintained. Use these 5 easy tips to make your Dymo LabelWriter last as long as possible.
1. Use the cleaning card regularly. Your Dymo LabelWriter comes with a cleaning card that should be used after every couple of rolls in order to keep the printer free from dirt and debris.
2. Load the labels properly. One of the most common mistakes that can cause damage to the printer is loading the labels improperly. Make sure there is no adhesive showing that could get stuck on the feed roller and that they are all the way to the left inside the machine.
3. Don’t fix jams with metal. You should never use anything metal inside the printer when cleaning or removing jams. To remove jams, use either a pair of plastic tweezers or a Q-tip and some WD-40 to remove the adhesive. Never use metal or you risk damaging the printer.
4. Don’t use it for high volume printing. While great for office use, these compact printers aren’t designed for high volume use. If you’re printing thousands of labels each week you should consider switching from a Dymo to a Zebra printer or Cognitive.
5. Use quality labels. Use high-quality labels that you are confident in. Read website reviews before you purchase. Using cheap labels with poor quality materials can damage your printer and shorten the life span of the print head. Unlike Zebra and Cognitive, which allow you to replace printer parts, the only replacement part available for the Dymo is the spool. If the print head goes bad as a result of poor quality labels, the printer will simply need to be replaced.
