10 Simple Tips to De-Clutter Your Life

I used to be the neatest, most organized person. Then dogs came in my life. And kids. Suddenly I had to learn how to adjust my own expectations to my household. However, just because your house may not be “perfect” at all times does not mean you still can’t have a level of structure/organization. In fact, there are a lot of simple changes you can make that can provide order and leave you feeling far more peaceful.

Use these 10 simple tips to de-clutter your life.

1. Identify clutter traps. Identify the places where clutter seems to build up. Use trays, baskets, and other storage containers to catch your clutter and keep it looking organized.

2. Utilize the space under desks. Do you have extra, empty space under your desks? Try placing baskets there to fill the void and provide instant storage for magazines, mail, books, or even other items like blankets or toys.

3. Keep your recycling bin handy. Open your mail next to the recycling bin so you can immediately get rid of all your junk mail.

4. Clean out your closet. Ask yourself if you have worn the item in the last 6 months? How does it look? Try to cut your closet down by 25%. One easy way to narrow down your closet easily is to ask yourself if you would buy the item if you were to go shopping at that moment.

5. Get control of cords. Cut off the end of a sock and string all your cords through the opening of the sock to get them in control.

6. Place folded sheets inside the pillowcase. Do you have a wad of sheets in a linen closet? Get your sheets under control and keep them all together by folding them and stuffing them inside the matching pillowcase.

7. Sort your junk drawer. Everyone has a junk drawer and a lot of times the contents should be sorted or thrown away.

8. Get rid of old books. As a former literature major, this one is tough for me. However, if you don’t occasionally thin down your book collection you’ll be buried up to your neck in books. Donate any children’s books to a library, give some away, and sell old textbooks for cash.

9. Organize your cleaning supplies. Keep all your supplies together in a bucket or basket. Or, better yet, put them all in a mobile bucket that you can carry with you from room to room.

10. Charge your gadgets more discreetly. Run a power strip through the back of your nightstand so you can charge your phone, iPod, e-reader, and other gadgets out of sight.
