Going to College: Tips for Packing
If you’re headed off to college this fall, chances are you’ve already begun thinking about what you’ll be taking with you and done some of the necessary shopping to make sure all of your things will fit comfortably into your room. One of the best things you can do to make the entire moving process easier on yourself is to do lots of planning ahead and maintaining an organizational system.
- Decisions, decisions. Before you can start packing you first have to establish what exactly is going with you to college and what is staying besides. Make sure items you aren’t taking with you are put away so they won’t accidently be packed with the rest of your belongings.
- Supplies. Get some packing supplies so you are ready before you begin. You will likely need packing tape and boxes. You may want to consider investing in the clear plastic storage bins. Not only are these more durable but you may find them useful for storage during the year, as they can go under your bed or on top of your closet.
- Fragile items. Make sure you wrap all fragile items in layers of newspaper and bubble wrap.
- Get organized. Label the top and sides of boxes with the contents so you can more easily find items as you are unpacking. You may even want to label it according to how you want it unpacked. For example, you may want to start by unpacking your bedding or clothing.
Furniture. If you’re taking any furniture with you, like a table, bed or sofa, wrap it in protective padding. You can rent furniture padding from moving companies or storage facilities and will have much better luck than you will with blankets and linen sheets that can tear or become stained.
